"We believe we've identified a very suitable location for that expansion project and we're going to continue to work closely with the government of Canada and we're going to continue to engage and develop pipelines in this province for many years to come," Nalcô said.

"In fact I would venture to say that that project will actually provide hundreds of thousands of jobs across this province."

Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault said Friday he plans to meet with Nalcô in Ottawa on Monday to present his position on the project.

Earlier this week, Nalcô gave a statement urging the construction of pipelines in the United States.

In his statement, Nalcô said pipelines should be built where Canada has the most "significant" reserves, such as near the Canadian border.

"I'm very proud of the work we did in Manitoba to bring in more than 600 megawatts of new natural gas, and I believe it would be irresponsible not to consider future development in this country," he said.

Opposition to pipelines in Canada

Earlier in May, TransCanada announced that it is planning to build a pipeline from Fort McMurray to the eastern corner of Alberta.

The pipeline is expected to bring natural gas that is pumped underground.

Opposition to the oil pipeline came to the fore during last winter's wild stock deal for the controversial oil sands project near Hardisty.

It was revealed in December that there was a potential 30-year deal worth more than $18-billion.

The Energy East project is expected to eventually deliver 1.9 million metric tonnes of natural gas per day to the world's largest market for oil and gas. (Canadian Press)

Nalcô said earlier this week the project will increase Canada's energy security and help build the North American economy.

"If we can get that bit of gas out to the market, and then we can bring that gas to Canada, then that'll actually provide an opportunity for people on the western side, the eastern side and northern border to have this investment," he said.

Nalcô said all of the proposed pipelines should be approved by federal regulators.
